Raised by her mother in the USA she had to face many racial slurs that made her feel being unwelcome. After she participated in school contests and received the highest praise for her singing when she was in the ninth grade, the girl began to feel more confident. The experience not only boosted confidence in herself, but it also changed her career ambition. In 1992, she earned her master's degree from the city's Julliard School. When she was 23, her first Broadway show with Paul Simon's The Capeman, and her debut in the film You've got Mail were both major breakthroughs. But her biggest break came when she starred in the part of The Lady of The Lake in the original Broadway performance of Spamalot receiving not just her the Tony Award for her performance as well as a lot of critical praise. The following year she was made the lead character the character Dr. Callie Torres in ABC's Grey's Anatomy. This led to her gaining wider fame. A well-known performer, she has also released both a song and a play. In addition, she has been an advocate for LGBT concerns.
