Perry has the father of actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Her first television appearances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother played the character. Perry did not decide to consider a career in acting until she reached the age of adulthood due to her parents being afraid of the negative impact stress might cause. Perry acknowledged that she was not at ease in the stage during high school. She began doing it to make friends in Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry left for New York, where she got small roles on shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The feeling of homesickness caused Perry back to California and theater roles were available. The Other Place was performed by her and her mother on Broadway in 2013. In 2015 she performed alongside her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Anna Christie on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry starred in the drama's nine episodes from 2016 on ABC's show The Family. Perry was also featured in the role of a political thriller Scandal with her father. She played a younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off show that was part of the CBS show The Big Bang Theory was another portrayal by her younger mother. The actress was chosen for the role despite her close family connection to the character.
